For those who dream of scaling great heights, the town of Ranau in the Malaysian state of Sabah is the ultimate gateway to one of Asia’s most iconic climbs, Mount Kinabalu. Towering at 4,095 meters (13,435 feet), Kinabalu is not only Malaysia’s highest peak, but also a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site that beckons adventurers from across the globe.
The ascent begins within Kinabalu Park, a biodiversity hotspot home to rare orchids, carnivorous pitcher plants, and over 300 species of birds. Trekkers typically undertake the climb over two days, spending the night at Panalaban Base Camp before waking in the early hours to reach the summit in time for a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds. The panoramic view from the top watching dawn break over Borneo’s rugged landscape, is an unforgettable reward for the physical challenge.
Beyond the summit, the surrounding area of Ranau offers soothing hot springs, canopy walks, and access to Poring Rainforest, making it a well-rounded destination for both extreme adventure and restorative nature experiences.
